I want to put some matting down on my basement floor but don’t want to waste my money on garbage. I’ll be putting exercise equipment on it as well as doing floor exercises on it so I want it to be durable but not so rigid that it’s uncomfortable to do floor exercises on. I’ve been looking at various interlocking mats systems but haven’t seen many good reviews. Any suggestions?

If you decide to build a home gym you have to decide what type of flooring you should use. If your home gym is not that large and does not have that many machines, you can just stick with whatever flooring was in the room already and just include some mats to work out on. If your home gym is large and includes machines, weights and other large and heavy items, it might be a good idea to get some special home gym flooring. If you have wood, linoleum or laminate floors the machines or weights could scratch and dent them, and if you have carpets the machines could slide or you could get carpet burns while exercising.

Fitness doesn’t have to be expensive. Most people think of home gyms as elaborate affairs made of heavy metal frames or sleek high impact plastic ones, with weights, pulleys, and other gadgets sticking out of them.

While these home gym systems are effective, you don’t necessarily need them to stay in shape. You can actually build your own gym equipment, using simple exercise gear that will allow you to work out without placing a large dent in your wallet.

Designing a home gym is more than simply trying to think of what equipment you’ll want to get. You have to consider the size of the room, its placement in the house, and then work your equipment around these parameters. Knowing the room dimensions of your home gym gives you a more accurate assessment of what you can do with it. Here are a few of the common dimensions of home gyms based on the types of rooms people usually convert into an exercise room, and some ideas for what you can do with them.
